This poem is from a collection: “Gas, Fire, and Water from Marcellus Shale”, a collection of poems and drawings of John Bromberg’s sculptures by Richard Aston which has the aim of making people aware of the time involved in the life cycle of gas from Marcellus shale (100 million years), and acquire an appreciation for the water which is threatened by the process of drilling for and extracting the gas. What right do we have to use all this gas in one century? How will this process affect future generations? A thematic poem goes:

GAS

How long has it been since you felt the sun, turned toward it, put out a flower, fed a flighty thing after your nectar?

How did you bear the weight pressing on you, the millions of years, the rocks and the sea?

Was it me you were fixing to attend,
I who burn you,
use the energy that you stored so long, all of it for me?

For what purpose?

To go where?

John Bromberg is a prolific artist working in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and Richard Aston published most of the poems, primarily in the region.

in the woods at last
we walk atop the snow
liberated!

No more sleeping
in peace,

only sleeping
while watched.

Plastic Piece on Earth

Keep the masses occupied
materially oriented.
Feed them “must see”
“must play” content.

Imply that jobs
are supposed to suck.
Escape through consumption!

Normalize excessive living
as life’s purpose.
Make it unpatriotic (or uncool)
to think otherwise.

Render freedom irrelevant.

Buddy Knows First

He leaps
from the couch
to growl at the sky.

Then looks back at me –
to say goodbye.

Next come the winds,
straight from Hell

all we can do
is bark and yell.

The Earth now an ember
our spirits release…

another failed planet
another failed peace.

Nature knows, it senses and suffers in ways we cannot see.

This current invasion of the Marcellus Shale region is but one front. Corporations want to control the whole game: product,supply,production,distribution, regulation,compliance… They want to patent nature. It is a crime.

Governments continue to be run by adolescent thinkers who control nuclear weaponry.

oil buys solar

marketing tricks
consciousness

walmart drains
main street

landmen salt
farmland

into
deadly
pastures,
we gladly go

lobbyists over democracy
secrecy over transparency
state over citizenry

the Marcellus play

bow to it
bend to it
march to it
sleep through it

into the past –
a  mine shaft,

we trundle.
